Depression is defined as a long term feeling of sadness, which left untreated can last a few months to several years. Symptoms are both mental and physical, unlike many other mental disorders. These symptoms include changes in sleep, changes in appetite, lack of concentration, loss of energy, lack of interest in activities, hopelessness or guilty thoughts, changes in movement, body aches, and suicidal thoughts (NAMI).
Treatment includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, interpersonal therapy, psychodynamic therapy, medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, second-generation antipsychotics, tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (Drugs.com), and complementary approaches like exercise and vitamin b9 (NAMI). Antidepressants have many side effects, withdrawal symptoms, and high risk of addiction and misuse (Drugs.com). Depression is more of always having a degree of sadness, and lucid dreaming can make some moments happier. It can be a small, comforting light in the dark. It will not be significant, but will be beneficial. It won’t necessarily heal the depression, but can help.
